Emergen-C may be on track to sell half a billion packets this year, but the fizzy powder was hardly an overnight sensation. We take a look at how it supplanted chicken soup as the go-to cold remedy.
Each packet of Emergen-C delivers 1,000 milligrams of ascorbic acid (pure vitamin C). Dissolved in water, that much acid would taste like vinegar, but Emergen-C also contains minerals that bond with the acid and release carbon dioxide. The drink becomes fizzy and the taste more palatable; plus, the body absorbs vitamins suspended in liquid more effectively.
