The Gabriel Project was founded in 1990 by Mark Melamed, a sixth-grade teacher in New Jersey. After learning of dying children in Africa who were unable to get to the United States for needed heart surgery, Melamed and his class formed the Gabriel Project to raise funds to help with airfare and living expenses incurred by the children and their families.
On October 31, the character and honesty that the project inspires were demonstrated by one Gabriel Project student at Veterans Memorial Middle School in Vineland, New Jersey.
