President-elect Barack Obama announced at a December 1 news conference that HiUary Clinton, his main opponent in the Democratic primaries, is his choice for secretary of state. In making the announcement, Obama stated that "Hillary's appointment is a sign to friend and foe of the seriousness of my commitment to renew American diplomacy and restore our alliances." That appointment, as well as others that Obama announced on the same occasion, is also a sign that he is not opposed to foreign military intervention.

Hillary Clinton supported the U.S. invasion of Iraq in 2003, whereas Obama had opposed the war from the beginning. Asked during the news conference if he still intended "to withdraw all U.S. forces from Iraq in 16 months after inauguration" he pointed out that he had said he would remove "our combat troops from Iraq in 16 months, with the understanding that it might be necessary--likely to be necessary--to maintain a residual force" (Emphasis added.)

He added that "it's also critical that we recognize that the situation in Afghanistan has been worsening"--a theater where he wants to send more troops. Hillary ...
