Early Life: Michael James Hucknall was born on June 8, 1960, in Denton, Manchester. He was raised by his father, Reg, a barber, after his mother Maureen left home when Hucknall was three. He claims his neighbour and her four daughters helped fill any emotional gap she left, but admits he had a difficult adolescence as he clashed with his father and dabbled in drugs. He hated school, claiming he felt ugly and was singled out for his red hair.
Career: Hucknall became involved in Manchester's punk scene during the 1970s as the lead singer of The Frantic Elevators. Four singles flopped and the band split up in 1983.
