Alan Davies once confided to Stephen Fry that he wasn't actually as stupid as he appeared. Fry, in his best schoolmaster tones, replied that he believed him, as it would be impossible.

Davies is currently best known for having an intellect half a step above that of a household budgie thanks to his appearances on panel show QI.

His attempts to answer questions that have baffled gargantuan minds make for great TV, so it might come as a shock to some TV viewers that Davies was once famous for portraying a true genius.

And thankfully, the character he brought to life with such gusto between 1997 and 2004 is coming back. That's right, get ready for another dose of Jonathan Creek magic.

In this New Year special, crime-fighting conjuror Creek is called in to solve unexplained events in a vast Gothic house, following several disappearances in a gloomy old attic known as the Nightmare Room. But for once, the man who makes a living designing magic tricks and debunking mysteries is completely baffled.

For 70 years the room has been claiming lives.
