FOR the band of close-knit mill workers, it is a happy photograph full of smiling friends. But for one man it could represent the vital clue he needs to find justice.
Billy Lavender, 63, was diagnosed with mesothelioma, a deadly disease caused by exposure to asbestos, earlier this year. He believes the exposure occurred while he was working as a fitter's mate at the Rank Flour Mill in Gateshead - now the Baltic art gallery - during the 1960s and 70s. He now hopes that if he can find some former workmates they may be able to help him make a claim against his ex-employers.
