TWELVE months ago, we cast our minds forward to what 2008 would hold with some trepidation.

With the North East's biggest company teetering on the brink of collapse and the region having been rocked by association with so many national "bad news" stories, there were probably more reasons to be cautious than optimistic.

So as we look back in reflection, it is with some mixed sentiment about how the year turned out.

The nationalisation of Northern Rock felt like a low point in February but subsequent events proved its downfall was not entirely of its own making.
