THE new super-council in Northumberland will be at the forefront of a renewed campaign to secure full dualling of the A1 through the county.
Members of the county council - who will make up the new unitary authority from April - have agreed to support a notice of motion calling for A1 improvement and dualling schemes to become top priorities for funding both regionally and nationally.
The motion was put forward by Conservative councillor Glen Sanderson, a long-standing campaigner for full dualling of the road between Morpeth and the Scottish border.
Coun Sanderson said the Liberal Democrat administration on the new unitary council should build on the initiative taken by the recently-formed A1 Campaign Group and proactively play its part in ensuring that Northumberland's voice was heard on the issue.
There were renewed calls for A1 dualling recently after Transport Secretary Geoff Hoon hailed the "major boost" of dualling the A11 through Suffolk and Norfolk at a cost of pounds 147m, for safety, journey times and the economy.
Work on the road was due to begin in 2012-13, but Mr Hoon ordered the Highways Agency to bring that forward to autumn ...
