54 revellers killed
AT least 54 New Year's revellers died in a fire that swept through a nightclub in the Thai capital Bangkok. Workers counting the bodies at the scene said about 100 others were injured when the blaze broke out in the two-storey building. The cause of the fire at the popular Santika Club, which attracts a well-heeled crowd of Thais and foreigners, was unknown.
Homes more affordable
HOUSING affordability improved "significantly" in 2008 on the back of property price falls, Britain's biggest mortgage lender said. The house price to earnings ratio, a key measure of affordability, dropped to 4.56 in November, following house price falls of more than 16% during the previous 12 months.
Politician's son's death
THE son of a German political leader has been found dead in Scotland, it was revealed yesterday. Stephan Bisky, 23, a student at Edinburgh University, the son of Lothar Bisky, chairman of the Left Party in the German Parliament, was discovered on Christmas Eve.
