HIGHLAND Council has been forced to pay nearly GBP250,000 in compensation in the last six years, the Press and Journal can reveal.

Figures obtained using Freedom of Information legislation show that there were 181 successful compensation claims made against the local authority, resulting in pay-outs totaling GBP248,898.

Nearly half that sum went to people whose vehicles had been damaged by uneven road surfaces and potholes.

In all, 44 people made successful claims, totaling GBP110,000, for damage caused by 'surface defects' on roads. The council also paid out GBP46,183 to 57 …
