Personal and background details of every person who dies from drugs in Scotland will be collected from the start of 2009 in an attempt to cut the number of future deaths.
The drug-related deaths database -- the first of its kind in the UK -- will be used by those working in the field to reduce the toll of drugs, which directly claimed 455 lives in 2007.
The scheme, which will be rolled out nationally starting tomorrow, builds on pilot schemes in Lanarkshire, Ayrshire and Arran, and Dumfries and Galloway.
