MAKASSAR, S Sulawesi, Jan 1 Asia Pulse - Vice President Jusuf Kalla said Indonesia would not import rice in 2009 because its rice production target has been achieved.
"We will not import rice because we have a production surplus of two million tons from South Sulawesi as well as from rice producing provinces in Java," Kalla said at the launching of a training to increase rice production for sub-district heads, sub-district military chiefs and "Babinsa" (non-commissioned officers for village control) in the district of Maros in South Sulawesi.
The vice president said Indonesia had this year succeeded in achieving self-sufficiency in rice after a period of almost 50 years in which the country's rice production continously dropped.
