BANGKOK, Thailand, Jan 1 Asia Pulse - A fire swept through a high-class nightclub packed with New Year's revellers early on Thursday, killing at least 59 people and injuring about 130, officials in Bangkok said.
A number of foreigners were among the casualties from the blaze that erupted shortly after midnight at the Santika Club in an entertainment district of Bangkok.
The Bangkok Post website quotes Pol Lt Gen Viboon Bangthamai, deputy metropolitan police commander as saying the fire, at the Santika Club in Soi Ekamai, occurred shortly after the midnight countdown.
"Fireworks lit for the New Year celebration probably torched the facility's curtain near the roof," he said.
Thong Lo district police commander Pol Col Suphin Sapphuang said 59 people had been confirmed dead - 53 at the scene and six who died later in hospital.
Local press reports said as many as 200 people sustained injuries and were rushed to five city hospitals.
