More than five years in the making, a recommended policy for NCAA members on dealing with pregnancies that have cost female athletes their scholarships has finally made it through its bureaucracy.

The NCAA planned to alert member schools--but not the athletes directly--of the recommended policies including protecting athletes from losing their scholarships for one year. A new NCAA Web site details the risks of becoming pregnant and how to avoid medical complications while continuing to play

Unfortunately the NCAA policies are voluntary and they do not include consequences for schools that continue to take away pregnant athletes' scholarships. Nor do they include any recommendations for dealing with the male athletes whose ...
