Colorado became the first state to reject an initiative to eliminate race and gender-based affirmative action programs, while Nebraska voted to end such programs.
Colorado voters turned down the Colorado Civil Rights Initiative by a slim margin. Leading the initiative was California millionaire and former UC regent Ward Connelly, whose initiatives also have had success in California, Washington and Michigan.
