John Feierabend, a well-known early childhood music specialist, has teamed up again with Peggy Lyman, a former Martha Graham dancer, to create Move It 2!, a sequel to the popular DVD Move It. This one is slightly more developed, with 23 musical selections that are more interesting and varied in terms of musical genres, choreography that is somewhat more innovative, and background scenery that is more colorful and closely integrated with the music selections. An added bonus feature offers the chance to browse the backgrounds and display them in your own classroom or studio.
Move It 2! is generally enjoyable and instructionally relevant. It addresses the National Music Standard of Understanding Relationships between Music and the Other Arts. Much of the choreography is designed for the upper body and can be performed while seated in a room of any size or shape. Dances that involve changing places or rotation of partners are well-suited for students in upper-elementary grade levels.
Move It 2! excels on two levels: 1) facilitating enjoyment and appreciation of classical music and 2) providing students a chance to physically experience musical phrasing and form. Its main shortcoming is that the "expressive movement" mentioned in the subtitle never comes from the child. ...
