Jason Sifford has written a collection of 10 jazzy intermediate-level pieces, which progress through a narrow range of difficulty. He has carefully crafted each piece to be happily accessible, with hand-spans of less than an octave, basic key signatures (mostly C/c/a or G/g/e), and highly patterned writing that features right-hand interest and left-hand rhythmic stability. Chords are used sparingly, and then nearly all are triads or inversions. Clearly and cleanly laid out, only the last piece requires a page turn. Suggested fingering is both helpful and minimal.
One element of the "detecting" involves analyzing each piece's patterns and noting how cleverly the composer varies them slightly to create a flesh new sound. This can easily provide a springboard for the student's own ...
