Blues Time offers the sounds of modern jazz with a combination of simplicity and sophistication that will provide enjoyment to a wide range of pianists--early intermediate to advanced. Some will discover a pleasurable read, while others will find a rewarding supplemental study. High school and adult students, in particular, will appreciate the intriguing rhythmic displacements, the harmonic coloring of 9ths, 11ths, 13ths and quartal voicings and possess hands large enough to negotiate the octaves and legato sixths.
Textures vary from two to three parts. Rhythms are constructed primarily from half notes, quarters and eighths; triplet eighths are the smallest subdivision; a straight or swing eighth style is indicated. Forms are based upon the traditional 12-bar blues progression; all but one include a chorus followed by an ornamented reprise. Prior knowledge of jazz harmony or the blues is not necessary to enjoy or teach these pieces, but you will know more about both after playing them.
