The importance of acquiring functional keyboard skills among undergraduate music majors has been highlighted in the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM) requirements. (1) Such skills include, but are not limited to, harmonization, transposition, improvisation, accompanying, open score reading, sight reading and playing by ear. Because class piano is the most efficient way to teach beginning piano students, it is considered an ideal setting in which undergraduate music majors could develop these keyboard competencies.
