It is competition season around here, which has got me thinking. The idea that another person is about to take an objective look at my students makes me see them with fresh eyes. This is a good thing, but it does make me uncomfortable. Furthermore, it makes me wrestle once again with the question of what exactly I am doing in my studio day after day.
What I am about to say suggests that my focus might be more on the nurturing side of teaching at the expense of creating fine musicians. I hope that is not the case; I have too much training in music not to have talented pianists coming out of my studio. But having said that, I sense an internal conflict these days ...
