A tractor-trailer crashed into a stopped school bus in Marion County, Florida, on September 25, and both vehicles caught fire. There were 21 middle-school students on the bus, and the situation looked ominous. However, motorists passing by quickly sprang into action to help.
Among these was James Horton, who identified himself as a father of three. When Horton saw the burning bus, he pulled over and rushed to help. "The Lord put us all there for that reason--to save those children," Horton told the Ocala Star-Banner.
While the efforts of rescuers saved 20 of the students, one 13-year-old girl, Frances M. Schee, tragically perished. Chris Mann, an elevator installer who stopped to help when he saw the burning bus, made a valiant rescue attempt, but told the Star-Banner: "The kid was lodged and I just couldn't get her out. There was nothing I could do."
