When singer Linda Thompson lost her voice shortly after the breakup of her long term musical and marital partnership with guitarist Richard Thompson, the folk and pop music world lost one of its brightest lights. The underlying problem was an anxiety disorder which is called (depending upon one's sympathies, apparently) either spasmodic or hysterical dysphonia, which makes singing impossible. Eventually it was discovered that Botox injections in the throat would relieve the symptoms, and after injections and physical therapy and voice lessons Thompson was able to return to musical activity. Her latest album finds her working with her exceptionally talented son Teddy, a fine guitarist and singer and a quietly brilliant songwriter, along with a host of folk-celebrity helpers including Martin Carthy, Eliza Carthy, John Kirkpatrick, and Susan McKeown.
