Like William Boyce and Michael Haydn, Johann Adolf Hasse is a composer whom I discovered (with great delight) only fairly recently, and I have since been anxious to discover more. These two discs are of rather strange provenance, but both are exceptionally worthwhile. Unless you are tipped off by the midline pricing or recognize the Baroque Voices series statement for what it is, you may be surprised to find, tucked inside the slipcase of the Requiem recording, the otherwise unaltered 1993 issue of this disc, complete with its original packaging and catalog number (Opus One OPS 30-80). As usual, the brilliant II Fondamento ensemble is in top form on their performances of the solemn and powerful Requiem mass and the even more emotionally gripping eight-movement Miserere setting.
