Late last summer, Wesley Loper, eight, and his seven-year-old sister, Emily, were swimming at the pool at Charlevoix Estates in Charlevoix, Michigan. Emily was swimming laps in the deep end, and Wes decided to join her. However, not being a very strong swimmer, he decided to walk along the edge of the pool.

Suddenly, Wes experienced trouble. "My feet started slipping and I started going under," Wes told the Charlevoix Courier. "I was trying to get back to the top, but my feet kept slipping."

Meanwhile, Dana Haney, who was supervising five children at the pool that day, momentarily turned away from the pool to chat with the children, and when she turned back, Wesley was gone. When she asked the children where he was they said, "It's his turn with the goggles."

Dana said she looked down, and Wesley appeared to be swimming along the bottom. "I reached for him and he wasn't responding, so I pulled him up to the surface and got him to the edge of the pool," she said. "I called for Larry to help me get him out of the pool and he rushed over and pulled him out."

Larry Gardner, Jr., who is the father of three children around the same age as those at the pool that day, had just stopped by to visit with some friends. Larry laid Wes down alongside the pool and performed CPR on him. By the time Dana got out of the pool, Wes was breathing.

"Wes threw up two or three times as we put him on his side," Dana said. "It was all a blur. He was revived almost immediately."
