Voters in California approved their Ballot Proposition 8 by 52 percent to 48 percent, which amended the state constitution to define marriage as between one man and one woman. It inserts the following brief 14-word sentence into the California Constitution: "Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California." According to the official California election website, the proposition does two things: changes the California Constitution to eliminate the fight of same-sex couples to marry in California, and provides that only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California.
