The challenge of change

Change is not always the most comfortable word in the English language. While it is often easy to see how a change will benefit others, it is not always that clear when it applies to oneself. However, pressure is growing on information professionals to examine the role they play within organisations.

Read the article starting on page 17 on the thoughts of guru and Online Information 2008 keynote speaker Clay Shirky and you could easily conclude that the current role of the information professional is under real threat.

The digital revolution, responsible for so many changes in working practices, is likewise behind a radical shift in the role of information professionals. Prior to digital, it was enough for information professionals to source the information that was required, hand it over and then retire quietly while the user got on with doing whatever they wanted to do with the information.
