Academics just have to write.

Some of us must write because a passion to put words on paper seems built into our DNA. Many need to write because there's something we yearn to share with the world. Most are compelled to write to pursue jobs, promotion and tenure in a publish-or-perish world.

Credibility from publishing a book can help a woman offset the unconscious bias that slightly devalues her achievements. Yet women's disproportionate investment of time for service, teaching and home responsibilities can add to the challenges of completing a book.
