Marching bands at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the University of California-Davis are in hot water over recent allegations of sexual harassment.
At UW-Madison, the entire world-famous 300-member marching band was suspended for a week in early October after allegations of hazing that included "inappropriate sexual behavior" and alcohol use. It marked the first time in at least 40 years that the band didn't play for a home game, and fans felt gypped.
Letters that dean of students Lori Berquam sent to band members' parents said "there's a concern that students may have been placed in unsafe situations or experienced humiliation in a hazing-like atmosphere." Four specific allegations cited: sexual fondling of the students against their will, and being forced or pressured to drink alcohol, cut their hair in an unusual way and "eat something disgusting."
