Sports spending at Division I schools has increased 7% a year since the mid-90s, which has limited opportunities for sports other than football and basketball, according to a report from a University of Arizona researcher.
Professor John Cheslock found that from 1995 to 2005, Division I schools put an extra $2.5 million into each football team on average, but only $135,000 per team for sports other than basketball or football.
"Athletic expenditures are increasing at a rate that complicates any efforts to increase or even maintain athletics participation activities," said Cheslock.
