Academic women win 'genius awards'.(NEWSWATCH)

Eight academic women were among the 25 McArthur fellows for 2008. Each recipient receives a $500,000 "no strings attached" award to further her work.

Applicants were judged on creativity, originality and potential for future contributions. All eight academic women winners are involved in the sciences:

* Regina Benjamin, 59, a rural family physician who heads the Bayou La Batre Rural Health Clinic in Alabama

* Kristen Bomblies, 34, postdoc research associate at the Max Planck Institute for Developmental Biology in Germany

* Andrea Ghez, 43, professor of physics and astronomy at UCLA
