Women in New Jersey's Rutgers University's political science department are unfairly compensated and shut out of leadership positions, according to a complaint filed by the department's female grad students and faculty.
The women filed a formal complaint with the dean of the school of arts and science in April 2007. Initially the school found no evidence of unequal pay, so female faculty members disputed the conclusion and the university conducted an internal report.
Political science is one of the most male-dominated fields, along with international relations and economics. Women earned 38.5% of degrees in political science and international relations in 2006.
