SHE RADIATES IN ANY DESIGNER SHE WEARS, BUT FOR HER BIG DAY, COCO BRANDOLINI CHOSE MENTOR OSCAR DE LA RENTA. WILLIAM NORWICH SNEAKS A PEEK.
Aveil. That's what I want to discuss today. I don't want a veil, and Oscar does," says Coco Brandolini, not exactly pacing but positioned, in a Marc Jacobs shift from several seasons ago and lacy Azzedine Alaia gladiator sandals. Between consulting for Adam Lippes and Alberta Ferretti and helping them prepare their spring shows, Coco is waiting at Oscar de la Renta to meet with her fashion mentor. He is designing the dress for her September 27 wedding to financier Matteo Colombo near Venice, and today is the final fitting. The dress is coming from the workroom, the designer from his office.
From 2001 to 2005, the showroom was her second home. She worked for the designer, a longtime friend of her parents, Georgina and Ruy Brandolini, as well as her grandparents Contessa Cristiana Brandolini (the sister of Gianni Agnelli ) and the late Count Brando Brandolini. Though the combination of her "aristocratic disinclination to try too hard" (as a friend describes it) and her penchant for modern bohemian chic greatly inspired both Oscar' s ateliers and young New York fashionistas, she missed Europe and returned to enroll at Central Saint Martins in London. Two years ago, on a winter weekend in Saint Moritz, she met her fiance at a party--love at first sight. Not long after, she retired her drawing pencils at Saint Martins and moved to Milan to be closer to Matteo. This past March, he proposed.
"As soon as I stopped crying from joy, I thought of Oscar." Although he has a huge bridal business, he doesn't do made-to-order dresses-- Jenna Bush was a recent exception--but still it was Coco's dream. She telephoned to tell him the good news. He was delighted for her; then came a silence. After all, Coco does work for Alberta Ferretti.
"Who is making your dress?" Oscar asked.
"You!" Coco exclaimed. "Please?"
