MANUFACTURERS KEEP FINDING ways to make printers perform better and more cheaply. Some all-in-ones can print a 4x6 photo in just under a minute for about 45 cents. Snapshot printers have fewer features but can produce very good shots for 25 cents. Laser models output text for less than 2 cents a page.
Technologies keep improving as well. You'll find some of these features on many of the latest models:
More convenient design. Inkjets and snapshot printers are getting larger LCDs, some as large 4.3 inches. Some LCDs are touch screens, making for easier editing. Tiltable screens are common on many new models. Sony's PictureStation snapshot printers offer an automatic touch-up button and skin smoothing. You'll also find better cropping capability on many machines.
Better connectivity. Some models include networking capability, so that several people on a home network can share a printer.
High-def photo viewing. One Sony snapshot printer includes an HDMI connection as an alternative way of viewing your photos in high-definition on your HDTV.
Improved printing. An increasing number of printers can automatically print on both sides of a page. A new Canon inkjet automatically adds a glossy coating to all plain paper for better-looking text and graphics. The ink cartridges used by HP on some inkjets have individual tanks for each color; they hold more ink than prior models, lowering the cost per page for color printing.
