The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is warning owners of 5 million unrepaired Fords, Lincolns, and Mercurys that the vehicles could pose a serious fire hazard.

Those vehicles have a defective cruise-control switch that could cause a fire, even while the vehicle is turned off and parked.
Ford has issued multiple safety-defect recall notifications for the 12 million vehicles involved, but many owners have yet to respond. Some models affected: 1993-04 Ford F150; 1997-02 Ford Expedition; 1998-02 Lincoln Navigator; 1998-02 Ford Ranger; '92-98 Ford Crown Victoria, Mercury Grand Marquis, and Lincoln Town Car; '93-98 Lincoln Mark VIII; and 1998-01 Ford Explorer and Mercury Mountaineer.
