Her car stereo having been lost to thieves three weeks earlier, liana Lopez responded when thieves struck a second time as she and her boyfriend were at home. Miami's NBC Channel 6 reported that the couple caught three thieves in the act of breaking into her car. Her boyfriend confronted them before they could leave, and engaged in an argument with the men in front of Lopez's Miami Lakes, Florida, home in the early morning hours of August 28.
As Ilana watched the confrontation, the three suddenly attacked her boyfriend. Having grabbed her gun before leaving the house, she exercised her right to protect her friend's life and her own, and to defend her property, and opened fire on the assailants, who fled the scene in a stolen SUV.
