Fast, relevant and actionable
I read Peter Williams' column in the October issue of IWR with interest. For years we've been extolling the virtues of timely and relevant information. Any business that makes decisions on out-of-date or irrelevant information risks failure and is unlikely ever to realise its potential.
But while the speed and availability of the right information is important, it also needs to be actionable. By that I mean that information is used as part of a well-defined business process in the context of any given situation.
I have often been surprised at how little information is used (not necessarily unavailable) to underwrite critical business decisions. It's no use providing raw data if risk teams do not review it, if procurement departments don't assess the likelihood of a major supplier failing, or if salespeople waste time by targeting companies ...
