It's been said that the difference between a recession and a depression is that, in a recession, someone you know is out of a job, whereas in a depression, you, yourself are out of a job. While it remains to be seen whether or not the U.S. market is even experiencing negative growth and its unclear how long the economy will feel the fallout from the housing market correction, the global credit crunch and consistent inflationary pressure, it goes without saying that, when times are tough, companies look to cut their costs, frequently by reducing the payroll.
