Legal threat to businesses as the email trail goes cold

Many British businesses could find themselves the victims of expensive legal actions because they are failing to archive their email messages adequately, according to a survey of 125 IT managers.
The study, carried out by market research company emedia on behalf of email management specialist Mimecast, found that a quarter of companies were unable to access an email sent three years ago, and that 69% could not produce a comprehensive email audit trail of records which would be admissible as evidence in legal proceedings.
The survey also found that some companies were unable to retrieve emails quickly.
More than a quarter of respondents (29%) said it would take them days or even weeks to retrieve a copy of a three-year old email, and an even larger proportion (42%) thought it was the responsibility of individual employees, rather than IT managers, to store and manage their own emails.
