(From The Journal)
JONATHAN Ross stepped down from his high-profile role as host of the British Comedy Awards yesterday as the BBC's chairman announced a tightening of editorial controls.
In the wake of the fall-out over the lewd phone calls to Fawlty Towers actor Andrew Sachs, BBC chairman Sir Michael Lyons demanded stricter control over the corporation's output.
Ross was suspended for three months without pay - a move which will cost him up to pounds 1.5m - by the BBC last night, a day after Russell Brand resigned.
Ross and Brand left messages on Sachs's answerphone claiming Brand had slept with his granddaughter, Georgina Baillie.
The prank was broadcast on Brand's Saturday night Radio 2 show.
Next month's British Comedy Awards, dubbed the comedy Oscars, would have been Ross's 17th year in the role.
