The captivating Jardin aux Lilas takes ballet to new heights--and daring depths.

As Roman Zhurbin, a 24-year-old Russian member of American Ballet Theatre, puts it, "Not everything is Giselle and Albrecht--there's a different side of ballet, too."

That understated side will be on display this month at New York's City Center when ABT honors Antony Tudor, an English choreographer whose specialty was the psychological ballet. In the 1936 Jardin aux Lilas, a delicately perfumed tragedy of manners, the luminous Julie Kent, a company veteran, reprises the role of Caroline, who must bid farewell to her lover on the eve of her wedding. But it's complicated; the Man She Must Marry, played by Zhurbin, a former folk dancer, must end a relationship, too.
