BERLIN -- The old bit of folk wisdom that patients with arthritis can predict weather changes by the aches and pains in their joints may be legitimate after all.
A study of 147 patients showed that substantial changes in pain and functional capacity correlated with changes in temperature, air pressure, and relative humidity, Dr. Jose Verges reported in a poster presentation at the 2003 World Congress on Osteoarthritis.
The next step is to analyze patients' synovial fluid to find a physiologic basis for the association, said Dr. Verges, scientific medical director at Bioiberica, a pharmaceutical company in Barcelona, Spain.
