Plush and plummy. Structured and steely. Strictly minimal or drop-dead overdone. Here, the long and short of all of our favorite fall coats.

The freshest new coats exaggerate for effect, resulting in big swaddling collars, cinched belts, poufed-out sleeves, and party-girl paillettes. Wear them with wide-strap sandals, skinny-heel boots, or platform pumps.

Beauty Note

Like these extroverted coats, eye makeup right now looks best when it's strong. Makeup artist Makky emphasizes the eyes with inky winged eyeliner, such as L'Oreal Paris HIP High Intensity Pigments Cream Eyeliner in Black. Use an angled brush to paint the color precisely along the lash line, and when you get to the outer corners, kick up the line at a 45-degree angle for "a catlike effect," Makky says. Keep the rest of your face neutral, and add a pale pink lipstick, such as Jane Lipkick Lipstick in Sorbet.
