This fall, the hottest hairstyles are truly wild (and sometimes even a little crazy). Eugene Souleiman explains the art of the tease.
"I like imperfect hair, hair you're not afraid to touch."
Unless you're a member of fashion's highest echelon, you're probably unfamiliar with the name Eugene Souleiman. Unlike his A-list peers, this top hairstylist doesn't have his own line of products or a namesake salon. But flip open any magazine or switch on the Style Network, and you're almost guaranteed to see his work. In his 15-year career, the London native has styled the hair for some of fashion's most recognizable ad campaigns--most recently, Calvin Klein, Christian Dior, and Gap--and runway shows, including Dolce & Gabbana, Narciso Rodriguez, Stella McCartney, and Alexander McQueen. And while he's best known for the kind of romantic, luscious hairstyles everyone wants to copy, Souleiman is equally regarded for his wild imagination--like when he embedded Japanese doll heads and pink flowers into a teetering updo for the new Gwen Stefani--inspired Harajuku Lovers fragrance-collection ads. Whether the look is practical or not, Souleiman's overriding trait is knowing when to put down the brush. "I like imperfect hair," he says. "A beautiful hairdo is one that doesn't look like a do at all--it's hair you're not afraid to touch."
