Byline: --KATE SULLIVAN
She may star in the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants movies, but Blake Lively has the distinct fashion advantage of never really having been a "tween star." That, combined with the precocious aesthetic of Gossip Girl, frees her from all things cutesy. Lively embraces real fashion, with a particular affection for Chanel. The actress, who has no stylist, chooses grown-up, urban colors--black, white, gray, and tan--but makes them young with styles like a lacy bubble dress, a V-neck romper, and dark tights under a white dress. A sleek suit is an unusual pick for an ingenue, but Lively makes hers look relaxed, not stiff, by leaving the jacket open and a few shirt buttons undone. The 21-year-old actress often keeps her jewelry subdued, wearing a single gold charm on a chain or subtle diamond earrings. All in all, playing Serena van der Woodsen has its style perks.
Riding the Waves
Lively is all long, loose waves and bouncing curls. "She likes her hair very free and fresh-looking," says her hairstylist, Rod Ortega. He aims a little volumizer at Lively's roots and uses a one-inch curling iron on random sections of hair. "She can run her hands right through her hair," he says. "Just a light spritz of shine spray at the ends keeps it together."
