Ralph Waldo Emerson said the secret to success was building a better mousetrap, a maxim the beauty industry has followed to glamorous (and sometimes disastrous) ends. Below, the most notable inventions to enter the patent office.

4000 B.C.: Century in which Egyptians first crafted combs out of fish bones.

1869: Year a St. Louis ophthalmologist first experimented with electrolysis by using a battery-powered needle to remove ingrown eyelashes.

10: Minutes it took to finish one eye with the first eyelash curler, Kurlash, in 1923.

4 to 10: Percentage of cocaine in a solution that a 1912 doctors' manual suggested be put on the skin to numb it before electrolysis.

$1.46: Price of the Princess Bust Developer--a kit containing cream and a plunger-like device--in an 1897 Sears, Roebuck and Co. catalog.
