The University of San Diego has rescinded an endowed chair appointment to a Catholic feminist theologian over her views on abortion rights.
At issue is Dr. Rosemary Radford Ruether's position on the board of directors for Catholics for Choice, a pro-choice organization. The decision to rescind the offered USD post has put the school in the middle of a debate over adhering to church teachings versus academic freedom.
The problem resulted from the appointment not having gone to the provost for final approval, according to a USD spokesperson.
