College presidents from more than 120 U.S. universities are calling on lawmakers to consider lowering the drinking age from 21 back to 18. The group argues that current laws actually encourage binge drinking problems on campus.
The national movement, called the Amethyst Initiative, describes the current culture as one of "dangerous, clandestine binge-drinking." They note the contradiction that at 18, one may vote and enlist in the military, but "are told they are not mature enough to buy a beer."
