Like the soul riders of the 1960s, a group of 17 young adults are visiting schools throughout the South in hopes of changing their perceptions and policies toward GLBT students.
The social justice group Soulforce has identified more than 200 colleges and universities that have explicit policies discriminating against GLBT students. The group of Equity Riders will visit 15 of them in October and November.
Scheduled stops include faith-based schools such as Liberty University VA, Heritage Christian University AL and Dallas Baptist University. The riders will also stop at two Georgia HBCUs, Morehouse College and Spelman College, which are reported to have climates of harassment and homophobia despite their non-discrimination policies.
