Two new reports by the Council of Graduate Schools (CGS) indicate women and minorities are making headway.
The annual nose-counting of doctorate recipients shows an increase of 9% over last year. Over 10 years, the number of women in PhD programs has increased by 10%, compared with an 8% increase for men.
Women and men continue to choose different fields. Of education students, 75% were female, compared with 42% of women who were business students.
Minority enrollment has also increased across all fields by 4-8% compared with 1% for whites. In science and engineering the increases for black students were 7% in the biological sciences and 5% in both engineering and physical sciences.
