Police arrested 54 people and seized 103 vehicles in a week-long operation targeting motorists in Bristol.

Using state-of-the-art number plate recognition cameras, officers pulled over 587 vehicles in five days.

In most cases, it was suspected that the driver did not have insurance or a valid licence.

However, illegal immigrants, car thieves and people in possession of weapons and illegal drugs were also discovered and taken to nearby police stations.

Dozens of cars failed road safety checks and some were found to have out-of-date tax discs.
